In a single surreal day of spring training, Will Ferrell suits up for ten Major League Baseball teams across five Cactus League games, playing all nine positions in a comic fundraising stunt for Cancer for College. Equal parts absurdist sports comedy and genuine tribute, the HBO special honors the legacy of Bert Campaneris while raising money and a lot of eyebrows.

This film is a lovely mix of homage and humanizing, where the game is celebrated but also taken down a few necessary pegs, and brought back to exactly the enjoyable place it should be.

The HBO special has more laugh lines per joke than… Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, more heart than… Blades of Glory, and more potential staying power than… Semi Pro.

Ferrell Takes the Field is laid-back humor, affectionate towards the game and those who work in it.

Ferrell may never make Cooperstown, but he’s a shoo-in for funniest guy in the U.S.

The funny lines keep coming.

A home run.

Ferrell Takes the Field, a Funny Or Die collaboration with MLB, turns out to be more than a stunt — though it’s a quite impressive one.
